The brave Iberians are holding out against Julius Caesar, like Asterix and his friends. So when Chen Huevos y Bacon's son is taken hostage, who better to rescue him than the Gauls? Taking him home to Hispania, now Spain, they tangle with the tourist industry and flamenco, and face a wild aurochs in the arena - or bullring. And can it be true? Cacofinix finds a fan in little Pepe!

What the druids have to say about Asterix in Spain
«It's spainful» is one of the many puns in the album, where the authors' talent is still true to form. The characterisation of Pepe and Huevos y Bacon is such that they go beyond the context of the album, becoming heroes in their own right. Asterix albums are very faithful (in their own way) to the chronology of historical events. This one features the Battle of Munda (45 BC), in which Caesar defeats Pompey's generals. The battle follows on from that of Thapsus (46 BC), which is referred to in Asterix the Legionary, and which saw Caesar winning a decisive victory over the troops and supporters of Pompey.

The year is 50 B.C. Gaul is entirely occupied by the Romans. Well not entirely! One small village of indomitable Gauls still holds out against the invaders. And life is not easy for the Roman legionaries who garrison the fortified camps of Totorum, Aquarium, Laudanum and Compendium...
